Things to do in Indy: Indy Fitness Festival
Around the beginning of August this year I heard some buzzing about this really great event. Indy Fitness Festival, started in 2017, is an annual fitness event that takes place in Indianapolis, Indiana and surrounding suburbs. It can be best described as a fitness crawl where you purchase a ticket to attend an unlimited amount of fitness classes and studios for a whole weekend.
This event was right on time because one of my goals this year has been to try different types of fitness classes in order to figure out what is going to be my specific thing. It's really a great value because for about $45 you can attend over 100 classes over the course of 4 days. Scheduling was easy and I really liked how the classes were organized by intensity level so that you can have an idea about what you can handle without over exerting yourself.
I initially did have classes picked out for all 4 days but I only was able to attend 2 because of unforeseen circumstances so next year I will make sure that I make it a priority to completely clear my calendar. My friends also participated by going to other classes as well. The two classes I did attend were fun and I’m glad that I went!
High Fitness
The first class I attended was High Fitness Cardio with Mommy Fit Indy in Fishers. It’s a choreographed High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) work out with amazing current pop/dance music. Like all HIIT workouts there are intense cardio peaks and it also includes great toning exercises such as squats and everyone’s favorite — burpees. The class took place outside at a local park. It was a chilly morning but this class definitely warms you up! I had a good time, it was more challenging than I expected, and everyone was very nice! It was in this class that I learned the correct way to do jumping jacks. They taught us all wrong in gym class years ago! Apparently, you’re supposed to jump out like an X and not like you’re making snow angels in the air. Its better for your knees and it honestly felt more effective.
Swerk — Sweat, Work, Twerk
The second class I attended and was most excited about was Swerk. I’ve heard about it a little bit online and as someone who is obviously into hip hop dance I was a little curious. I attended the Sunday morning class with DanceWorks Indy. Swerk is described as a pop and hip hop dance fitness class. This class focuses on the booty, core, and cardio fitness. I enjoyed this class too but I honestly need to ramp up how often I do cardio workouts because it was hard for me to keep up while getting tired and trying to actually dance. I’m sure I looked crazy, but at least I had fun haha. One funny thing I learned in this class was that there is a clean version 🤯 of one of my club favorites Bring It Back by Travis Porter.
Leave a comment if you’ve participated in the Indy Fitness Festival this year or in the past, I’d like to hear other experiences too!
